A&M-SA welcomes Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson
Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson had an eventful first week as A&M-San Antonio's new interim president. She officially began her tenure on Monday, January 12. That afternoon she gave an interview to Univision 41 San Antonio, where she spoke about her South Side roots and her plans for the University's future.
Dr. Matson travelled to Austin for the first day of the 84th Session of the Texas Legislature on Tuesday, January 13, where she was able to meet with many members of the Bexar County Delegation. As a guest of Senator John Whitmire, from Houston, she was able to attend the opening day ceremony for the Texas Senate.
Students were greeted by Dr. Matson as she toured the A&M-SA campus on Wednesday. Getting to know the student population and focusing on student success is high on her agenda!
On Thursday, January 15, The Texas A&M University System and Chancellor Sharp hosted a Welcome Reception for Dr. Matson at A&M-SA's Educational & Cultural Arts Center. Among the attendants welcoming Dr. Matson to the A&M family were Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, Regent Elaine Mendoza and the Honorable Henry Cisneros. University Library receives grant
The University Library was awarded a grant by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to post public programming on the theme of the Civil War. The grant comes from the Institute's Civil War 150 program, designed to encourage public exploration of the impact and contested meanings of the Civil War.
Dr. Amy Porter, assistant professor of history, and Emily Bliss-Zaks, Arts & Sciences librarian, have secured Dr. Catherine Clinton, Gilbert M. Denman endowed professor in American history, to give a presentation titled "Emancipation & Commemoration: Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman in History & Memory" to be given on February 11.
A&M-SA representative joins San Antonio delegation at the White House
Mario Vazquez, associate vice president for institutional advancement, represented the University at the White House this week as President Obama honored the San Antonio Spurs for their 2014 NBA championship, their fifth title in the past 15 seasons.
Mario accompanied Congressman Lloyd Doggett, who represents downtown San Antonio, to join in demonstrating San Antonio's spirit and pride in its basketball team.
